Build Diary: Guardian Home Extension – Week Two
Build Diary: Guardian Home Extension
Week two in the diary of a Guardian Home Extension build in Dublin. We’re back with Sara and Stephen to see how week two of their Guardian Home Extension build has been for them.
A quick recap for those who didn’t catch the Guardian Home Extension: Week One Build Diary; Sara and Stephen have recently purchased a home and are extending at the rear. With a baby on the way they needed a solution that could be completed quickly and they’ve opted for the Guardian Home Extension, with a Guardian Warm Roof and VELUX roof windows.
Let’s hear from the homeowner
The weather in Dublin was pretty awful for week two of the build, and we were a little concerned that progress might be held up because of that. We needn’t have been worried as in-spite of the rain the guys we’re able to get on without any trouble. By the end of the week the roof was on, our sliding doors were in, and the extension had really started to take shape.
We can’t believe how fast and pain-free progress has been so far. In just two weeks we have walls and a roof to our extension, and even the bad weather hasn’t slowed the pace of the build.
Build week two
- Roof frame erected and secure.
- Boarding and weather-proofing of roof completed.
- VELUX roof windows installed.
- Rear sliding doors installed.
Days one
With the walls of the Guardian Home Extension up by the end of the previous week, week two kicked off with the ring beam being secured into place. Preformed angle cleats were used to secure all corners of the beam, ready for the aluminium roof rafters to be installed.
Day two
The aluminium rafters and ridges were installed to form the frame of the Guardian Warm Roof, and wooden battens were positioned to support the VELUX roof windows. The aluminium and steel rafter cleats were then used to secure the rafters to the ring beam.
Day three
With the structural frame of the Guardian Warm Roof in place, day three saw the roof structure boarded and the weather-proof membrane go up. With all boards pre-cut off-site, fitting them made for very fast work.
Days four
Now that the roof boards were in place, the VELUX roof windows could be installed into the pre-cut holes. Once the VELUX roof windows were installed, the remainder of the roof was covered with the weather-proof membrane.
Day five
The final thing for week two was installing the large sliding doors. The door frame was positioned and fixed into place, before the sealed units were installed.
What’s next?
The first two weeks of the our Guardian Home Extension build have seen amazing progress. Structural modifications have been completed with the installation of the steel beam, and partial removal of the rear wall. We’ve seen the walls go up, the roof go on, the VELUX roof windows go in and the sliding doors be installed. Plus, the whole building is now weather-proofed.
Still to do externally are the rendering and roof tiles, internally we have insulation to be fitted and plastering and decor to complete. Join us next week to see how the build progresses!
